The project: 2019 Trail Development Artist Residency (TDAR) in and around Dýrafjörður, Westfjords, Iceland
Dýrafjörður lies right in the middle of our Wildfjords trail development project, which covers the area between Ísafjörður in the north to Látrabjarg in the south. Due to its central location, and also the excellent walking opportunities that the area provides, we are planning to run a ‘Trail Development Artist Residency’ (TDAR) in the autumn of 2019 to be themed around trails—specifically their development (establishing a recognised network of trails within Dýrafjörður and the Westfjords as a whole), and their increased usage (to get more locals and travellers walking the trails).
The residency will invite 9 artists for a duration of 17 days, and will be part walking, and part creative endeavour in a residential setting. The trail development residency will ask artists to explore and respond to the following themes:
Creative trail marking systems i.e. different ways of marking the trails
Performance of local stories, in collaboration local people
Local ecology from an edible/cultural-use and conservation perspective
Experience of walking and living out on the land in and around Dýrafjörður over a period of several days
The residency will also facilitate creative process orientated to the ecological, and explore questions such as, ‘what do these mountains and seascapes represent for you as an artist, and what forms of creativity do they illicit?’
The results will help develop multi-media content in support of our project objective to deepen and develop appreciation of local ecology and culture, and to inspire both locals and visitors to once again walk on some of the region’s old herding and walking routes in a safe and facilitated manner.
We will hold space and trust whatever creative process emerges within individuals and the group. You will not bound by any expectation.
