At heart, we’re performers orientated to the ecological, and with dreams of awakening the soul within—the one that finds resonance with and alignment with the wild.

Our individual and collective creative practices have been developed in collaboration with the earth and the knotty entanglements that exist between humans and the more-than-human (ecological) world. These practices aim to design, re-imagine and facilitate new forms of personal, cultural and ecological knowledge that have service and adventure at their heart.

We perform, then, on behalf of ecology, and we create opportunities, through our Pathfinders School of Bushcraft and Wizardry, for you to engage with new knowledge, skills and perspectives—so everything from foraging to storytelling to wild camping and mountain adventure to re-wilding and medicine and much, much more. All our offerings are there to help you identify and explore what it means to have an ecological identity—with all the richness that that entails!

Why performance?

Performance practice as a interdisciplinary / post disciplinary field of study is diverse and applied to many situations, sometimes aligning with familiar notions such as a concert performer, and at other times designed to elucidate, resist, experience and re-imagine cultural process, power structures and relationship (of all kinds). It's a journey to the edge, then, and as theorist, Conquergood, states 'performance privileges threshold-crossing, shape-shifting and boundary-violating figures, such as shamans, tricksters and jokers, who value the carnivalesque over the monumental'.

Ecological performance or performing ecologies is a recent development within the field and may refer to any performance practice incorporating the ecological or the narratives surrounding it.

Who?

Our offerings are open to all kinds of artists and anyone drawn to exploring and developing their gifts in the context of wild land and seascapes. We aim to curate groups with varied experience and perspective to allow a truly multi-disciplinary experience to emerge between us.

Each offering that we make typically facilitates, explores and invites creative response to questions and themes such as:

☆ What happens to creativity once orientated to the ecological?
☆ Specific ecological niche and pattern
☆ Physicality and sensuality

Creative responses may then, at times, act as supporting mechanisms for projects grounded in conservation and development of ecological awareness, through, for instance: exhibitions, media narrative development and artistic publications. 

Will I be expected to perform in The Pathfinders School of Bushcraft and Wizardry?

There is no specific expectation to be or act or do or create in a certain way. We will trust and respect your reality and welcome it as part of our collaborative-shape shifting experience together. All offerings contain a space for creative response, some of which will be in service to specific projects grounded in conservation, exploration, deep ecology, community design and the arts.

What level of fitness is required?

Depending on the opportunity, some previous camping-outdoor living experience is advised (though is not requisite) while a decent level of fitness is normally a requirement.

How much do trail adventures and classes/workshops cost?

Costs vary depending on the specific offering being made, and the applicant's level of income (we have a sliding pay-scale for some opportunities). 

For some opportunities, we work to obtain arts and development funding to enable us to run things at a subsidised rate. This will be clearly marked where applicable.
