World Trails Network

Established in 2012 at the World Trails Conference in Jeju Island, South Korea, the World Trails Network is an international organization championing the global trails industry and promoting the world’s leading trails and trail destinations. Every two years, a community of trail managers, users and developers gather at the World Trails Conference. The network operates largely on a volunteer basis, with several themed Task Teams developing and carrying forward various trail-related projects.

I have co-charied both the Media Task Team and the Arts and Culture Task Team.

Artists Talking Walking Seminar Series, 2023-2024

Through the Arts and Culture Task Team, I have curated and organised a series of online conversations exploring the role walking artists play in shaping, investigating and celebrating trail culture. The seminars run October 20, 2023 through to July 19, 2024, generally on the last Friday every month at 4 pm GMT. If you’re an artist interested in walking, we warmly invite you to join. View the programme here.

Specific topics we feature include looking at the role walking artists can play in:

  • Strengthening the identity and voices of communities through walking

  • Gathering and sharing stories of the beliefs, heritage, landscape and aspirations of local people and their places

  • Facilitating cultural exchange between hosts and visitors

  • Generating conversation and debate on shared global issues whilst walking

  • Celebrating diverse ecologies and humanity’s stewarding of them by making work in response to the natural landscape.

Trails Film Festival

In 2018, I presented Wayfinding in the Westfjords at the World Trails Network Conference in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
Subsequently, I joined the network’s Media Task Team, and, together with a revolving team, helped deliver the world’s first trails film festival. Since its inception, the film festival has shown in worldwide locations including: Greece, Lebanon, UK, USA, Spain and Taiwan.

If you’d like to explore hosting a trails film festival in your location, contact the current team: TRAILS.FILM.
